Four Phases of Discipleship


Come and See
This phase is to introduce people to Jesus – helping them see Jesus clearly, see who they can become through Him, understand what it means to be “lost”, and comprehend their need for a Savior.

1. Submission (Disciples submits to Jesus) – Disciples accept Jesus’ invitation to get to know Him, put their faith and trust in Christ, and obey Christ following salvation.

2. Memorization (Disciples memorizes Jesus’ words) – Disciples come to understand who Jesus is, come to understand who they can become through Jesus, accept God’s Word, and come to understand God’s salvation.

3. Action (Disciples learns Jesus’ way of ministry) – Disciples see and begin to get involved in the ministry of Jesus.

4. Imitation (Disciples imitates the life of Jesus) – Disciples live appropriately in family relationships and in work relationships.

5. Multiplication (Disciples find others to be Jesus’ disciples) – Disciples spend time with a disciplemaker and share their faith with others.

Come and Follow Me
This phase is to help disciples grow in the spiritual disciplines and habits that Jesus taught – resulting in steadfast faithfulness and devoted obedience to Jesus.

1. Submission (Disciples submits to Jesus) – Disciples submit to God’s will, to God’s timing, to the control of the Holy Spirit, and to those the Lord has put in authority over them; submit in worship to the Lord; and demonstrate their submission through obedience.

2. Memorization (Disciples memorizes Jesus’ words) – Disciples grow in understanding God’s Word, God, Jesus, salvation, Christian life, the Church, and the future.

3. Action (Disciples learns Jesus’ way of ministry) – Disciples serve the Lord, defend the truth, learn and use their gifts in ministry, practice hospitality, serve those in need, and learn and practice stewardship.

4. Imitation (Disciples imitates the life of Jesus) – Disciples follow the example of Jesus, live in God’s righteousness, overcome temptation and live free from sin, live in right relationships, endure and pray for those under persecution, and live in anticipation of the Lord’s return.

5. Multiplication (Disciples find others to be Jesus’ disciples) – Disciples build and maintain relationships with others, learn to share their faith, and share their faith.

Come and Be With Me
This phase is to deepen a disciple’s spiritual habits adding leadership to his ministry involvement – resulting in a more Christ-like character and more fruit produced in his life.

1. Submission (Disciples submits to Jesus) – Disciples submit to God’s will and a relationship with Him, to God’s work, to the control of the Holy Spirit, and to those the Lord has put in authority over them; submit in worship to the Lord; demonstrate their submission through obedience; and submit through stewardship now and through God’s rewards for the future.

2. Memorization (Disciples memorizes Jesus’ words) – Disciples grow in understanding God’s Word and truth, God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, salvation, the spiritual realm, the Christian life and persecution, and God’s work in the future.

3. Action (Disciples learns Jesus’ way of ministry) – Disciples serve the Lord in ministry, defend the truth, encourage the faithful and rebuke the wayward, and support those in need; some disciples will serve in preaching and/or teaching ministries, some disciples will serve in church leadership, and some disciples will serve beyond their local church; and is to be generous in giving.

4. Imitation (Disciples imitates the life of Jesus) – Disciples follow the example of Jesus and set an example for others to follow, live in God’s righteousness, overcome temptation and live free from sin, live in right relationships, endure and pray for those under persecution, and live in anticipation of the Lord’s return.

5. Multiplication (Disciples find others to be Jesus’ disciples) – Disciples have a heart for others and a plan to share their faith, build and maintain relationships with others, share their faith, and help others to become disciples.

Remain in Me
This phase is to help a disciplemaker persevere in a lifestyle of Christ-likeness – resulting in continual personal growth and the training and equipping of new disciplemakers.

1. Submission (Disciples submits to Jesus) – Disciplemakers submit to God’s will and a relationship with Him, to the Lord; demonstrate their submission through obedience; and submit through faith and faithfulness.

2. Memorization (Disciples memorizes Jesus’ words) – Disciplemakers grow in understanding God’s Word and truth, God, the Christian life, and the Church.

3. Action (Disciples learns Jesus’ way of ministry) – Disciplemakers serve in the ministry and in the character of Jesus, lead and care for those in the Church, teach others, stand for the truth and against sin, and support those in need.

4. Imitation (Disciples imitates the life of Jesus) – Disciplemakers follow the example of Jesus and set an example for others to follow, live in God’s righteousness, and endure and pray for those under persecution.

5. Multiplication (Disciples find others to be Jesus’ disciples) – Disciplemakers share their faith and develop others to become disciples.
